My original idea for the function of magic was Sparklets, something I will write about later. But I recently came up with this idea.
So, matter holds together the universe. The real universe. Of course there are also things like particles and quarks at the very base, but i'm just going to call this a form of matter.
In Diambera, Universe 196, there is Normal, Echo, and Antimatter.
Normal Matter makes up a lot of the universe, and it is predictable. It is the rocks and flowing and biological material that follow a familiar set of law.
Antimatter is made a bit complicated in Universe 96. It is unpredictable and defies the Normal Matter, usually destroying it on contact.
But there is Echomatter, a sort of middleground between the two. It changes the properties of either to bounce off of eachother, and, depending on the material and angle, that makes all kind of funky things. Echomatter is heavier than Normal Matter too, meaning it often gets caught in an orbit with it, allowing Normal Matter to continually be influenced by it.
The frequency and echo part come from how Echomatter is affected by sound. At certain, low frequencies, it can vibrate, which is the main way magic is produced- this vibration of normal, stable matter.
This is all very experimental and I will probably edit this post later but here's a quick drawing.

This is indeed how protons, electrons, and neutrons work, my youthful self.
But there is something interesting here, about sound; it would apply outside of just the echomatter, right?
In the world, all things are vibration. From the quark to the atom to the cell, the organ and organism and beyond, all things are in motion. Therefore, that would mean that they have a certain frequency, wavelength and vibration. The manipulation of matter would therefore be the manipulation of wavelengths, no new types of matter needed.
The manipluation of matter occurs within the very rules of the physics; matter tends to want to return to a baseline of low entropy, stillness, minimum action, so it will try to align itsself with its enviornment. if a being has a strong ability to manipulate an environment to its will, then the matter around that being will have no choice but to bend to the intention, and those be the rules of magic. Sound, being a sort of wave, if concentrated, can become like the being (or be used by the being) manipulating the environment to its will, most especially if it is in harmony with that enviornment in the first place!
As an example, think about a series of harmonics. If a lower frequency is aligned with a higher frequency at harmonic points, it would be a lot easier to align that lower frequency into a state of higher frequency - they are in sync, after all, and it requires much less of a change in state to have these two phases perfectly aligned.
All of this to say; if you are able to make sound, music, light, that is harmoniously resonant with its environment, it becomes much easier to align the rest of the environment with this harmony, creating a sort of exponential harmony (resonance cascade for my HLVRAI nerds out there, of course, if you think about what those two words mean and not as jargon that supposed to sound scientific - whatever!). And think about this; light, being the combination of all wavelengths, has a much higher probability to be aligned with a lower frequency (like matter) and is therefore more easily able to have it be aligned.
